My dad told me a few months ago to respect my mother's belief. Another example why I can't. This religion is so rotten. How anyone can choose not to be there for their ailing parent because of religion is beyond me. -

Evolution is a Fact #1 - Protein Functional Redundancy
by cofty ini intend for this to be one of a series of bite-sized ops on the evidence for evolution.. introduction to dna genes are sequences of dna made up of words (codons) each of which are three letters (bases) long.
there are only four letters in the genetic alphabet (acg&t) each word or codon is the recipe for one amino acid.
there are 20 different amino acids in living organisms.

I'm not sure what is so controversial about this topic or post. How many time does it need to be stated that Evolution has nothing to do with creation or the beginning/origin of life. Everything in Cofty's opening post is basic biology you will learn at either the high school level or an introductory biology course in college with the exception of the topic Cytochrome C protein molecule. That topic would probably be discussed in General Biology I at least in America as it is a protein found in Mitochondria and I remember it being covered briefly.
Cofty has every right to post this topic as you have every right not to click on it and comment. I can only assume the attacks are made because a logical scientific dispute is too difficult. Here is an attempt, and will note it's not my original thoughts, paraphrased from my poor recall of journal articles i've read, whether my logic is faulty at least it was a attempt vs an ad hominem attack :
In a Evolutionary progression you would expect to see a gradual change and transitional change in structures and differences between species. Such is the argument made and used as proof for evolution with transitional fossils. The same would be expected with Cytochrome C protein. However as has been noted by microbiologist Dr. Micheal Denton the difference between cytochrome C protein in bacteria was more similar to fish than mammal. The opposite should be true to support a transitional change. He further states that there is no transitional or immediate groups, something that should be there to support evolution.
I didn't really make a strong argument but point is one could make one.
I believe Dr. Denton is pretty much an outlier and dismissed by his peers

Fishing and JW's???
by lurkernomore inso i was just reading a thread and came across a completely new jw 'rule', that of not being allowed to go fishing!..
at least it's new to me as i always enjoyed fishing as did others in my old congregation.
anyone else heard of this or had this imposed on them in they're jw lives?.

I haven't heard of this one before. But the BOE and the fanatical pioneers in my old congregation would make up rules all the time. Just boggles my mind why anyone would want to stay involved in a high control group that allows no decision making. -

What is your relationship with ALCOHOL?
by nicolaou inhere in the uk new drinking guidelines have been issued which suggest "no more than 14 units a week - equivalent to six pints of beer or seven glasses of wine.".
another piece of the advice which is getting a lot of attention is that "if people drink, it should be moderately over three or more days and that some days should be alcohol-free.".
already people are making cries of "nanny state!

I rarely drink but if I go to a bar, casino, cruise, and similar forum (football games) I will drink. If I drink at home it is mainly sweet wine like Moscato. I watched my father abuse alcohol and have made a fool of myself enough not to over indulge this point in my life. -

What Was The Silliest "Offense" That You Were Counseled For?
by minimus inwhen i was a teenager, i was told by an elder that because i smiled a lot and was known for my good sense of humor, that i should come across as "more serious".
so before i was appointed a ms, while in my late teens, i transformed myself into a much more "serious" brother.. were you ever told that you needed to work on something that you knew was stoopid?.

Counseled by an Elder for watching BraveHeart when it came out in 1995. I just turned 18 and was literally my first R rated movie I watched at a theater. So glad I left around that point in my life. He was such an asshat, and it was hard for me to say nothing. The reason was I knew his 15 year old daughter was changing clothes in the girl's locker room when she got to high school, and was having sex with her "wordly" boyfriend. It was three years later and she ended up pregnant, and was forced to marry that guy.
So many of those giving "counsel" had tons of family issues.

I play online games and am a member of a few gaming clubs. I'm 38. Anyway, the JW I know that played online games also tended to play the variety of card games like Magic the Gathering and Yugi Man. All of these were around when I was a teenager including online games. None of the JW doing these activities cared if they were playing with inactive JW because they also were playing with "worldly" people too. All of it is condemn and I can still remember a talk in the mid 90's on the dangers of Yugi Man and how it can take you away from the preaching work. Their tune never changes. -

Should doctors tell JW patients that there is disagreement about Watchtower's blood policy.
by Lee Elder inthis has been a controversial issue among doctors and medical ethicists.
i think it basically comes down to the fact that physicians have a responsibility to establish the presence of informed consent.
is it really possible for a person to give informed consent if they are not accurately informed?.

I'm in nursing school, and anytime we would cover culture the JW blood issue would be cover. We had to even role play this scenario. The material in our textbook is quite vague and mostly focuses on respecting the decision of the patient. I'm curious how much in depth knowledge a typical American surgeon would have on JW blood doctrine. -

I grew up in this "religion" in the 80's and 90's and never heard positive comments from non-believers. When I started working people would tell me stories of how the JW cheated them out of money and they aren't to be trusted. Mostly I would hear very negative things and still do today.
